Legs in Summertime Shape

With summer upon us, I felt it might be good to give you all a few ideas to get those legs in summertime shape!! Besides the walking lunges there a re few other leg exercises that you may want to put into your routine for a change for the summer.

How about doing sprints to raise that BOOTY?

10 50 yard sprints, that's all. Sprint down and walk back no resting in between. It only takes about 10-15 minutes but it gives your legs a great workout and over all better shape. Try those 2x's per week! You can also run some bleachers for your second cardio a couple nights a week. Take yourself to the track and run those bleachers a few times. If you can be consistent to this for 4-6 weeks (2x per week) you will see a change in the shape of those hams.
Give it a try and take along a buddy - it's easier to have a little friendly competition
with these.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water!!

The NPC New England Bodybuilding Championships

Boston Mass - I attended this show as a judge and the competition in NE was awesome on this day!!! The highlight of the day was my girl, Susan Gnesda, wining her class (lightweight) and masters. I have to say I judged her really hard as I didn't want anyone saying I was favoring her but regardless, she came out on top. She was a true warrior and awesome to work with. Her husband was great and really supportive as well! Congrats Susan and all those who won in Boston.

Jim Decotis puts on an excellent show as far as guest posers go. He always has top notch pros. This year he had Dave Palumbo and Colette Nelson as well as Big Jay Cutler (who had just been posing in Pittsburgh the night before). He also had last years overall open winner, Brian Saltzman and NE's own, Maggie Blanchard.

2006 Colorado Pro Am

I was hired to go to Denver to perform food prep services (Elite Contest Prep!) for Big Bill Wilmore @ his pro debut.

Bill Wilmore and Carla

This was an exciting show as it was the first time that 3 rookie pros, Phil Heath, Marcus Haley and Bill Wilmore were debuting at the same show and subsequently that all 3 were in the top 5 (bringing home pay checks the first time out!)

It also was the comeback show for 80;s superstar, Gary Strydom. So there was excitement in the air for sure. My hats off to Shawn Ray, he did it all and put on a great show. Also the Kandis Brothers, owners of Vyotech could be seen all weekend ensuring that things ran smoothly.

I have to say that it was a lot of work feeding a 250 lb. BB but it was a great experience. I worked closely with Bill's trainer, Hany Rambod, and that was what I wanted to help my little business get credibility. As a matter of fact it all went so well that I was hired to do the same thing at the NY Pro. So the outcome in the mile high city, which, by the way is sooo clean, was;

Phil Heath - 1st,
Darrem Charles - 2nd,
David Henry - 3rd,
Marcus Haley - 4th,
and
Big Bill Wilmore 5th

It was a very exciting moment seeing all my friends in the posedown together. I also need to mention that Marcus Haley's posing routine brought me to tears.
He belongs on the BB stage performing for the people.

New York Pro
New York, NY - The following weekend found me in NYC overlooking ground zero from my room and prepping food for the 250 LB beast (good thing he is such a nice guy). It was repeat performance as far as the prep but poor Bill was pretty sick of
eating yams and steak! I also was working for Protan backstage at this show so I had a couple hats on this weekend.

Dave Henry

But...alas it was all good as Big Bill not only took another 5th but also qualified for the OLYMPIA! I am so proud of him for achieving such great thing his first 2 times out on the pro stage. Phil Heath took 1st again in a controversial decision over veteran Darrem Charles. Big Dennis James took 3rd and Dave Henry was in a controversial 4th with Bill rounding off the posedown with 5th.

May Wrap Up

As you can see, May was a whirlwind of activity and travel. It took me the whole next long weekend to recover. Not to mention that after the Colorado I ramped up my own training with a diet change and double cardios. I got to spend Tim Gardner's birthday with him in Colorado! and that was his present to me. So I was pretty busy but I am psyched - the season is definitely underway and it looks like I will be at the O working for Mr.Wimore again!!! Hopefully we will have a repeat performance of the spring shows but no matter what...it's an awesome journey!

You can get a more detailed account of the shows on my blog if you are interested!

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

TURKEY CUTLETS

Package of turkey cutlets or turkey tenderloins sliced thin

Progresso Bread Crumbs

salt/pepper/garlic powder

juice of one lemon

Olive oil - Pam

Heat up a nonstick fry pan.
Rinse off the turkey and dredge it in the bread crumbs (you have sprinkled the bread crumbs in a shallow plate) and shake off excess. Spray olive oil Pam into pan till heated and add the cutlets. Brown on each side (couple minutes each side) and sprinkle with spices.Cook in batches. Once all turkey is browned return it all to pan and add lemon juice. Lower heat and cover. Cook through for about 10 more minutes or to keep warm.

You can serve these with carbs and veggies or they are good just plain as
your snack! In the off season feel free to use them in a whole wheat
sandwich!! You can also add grated cheese to the bread crumb mixture in the
off season!

CONTEST PREP TIP

As
show day is here and you find yourself backstage and don't know what to do with yourself!!
First take a deep breath, maybe plug in your ear phones and listen to your routine music and pose in place, squeezing all your poses. Just this alone is a great pump believe it or not. Nibble on whatever your trainer has told you to eat back there (a glass of wine can be very stress relieving!) Next you may want to pump up, remember to keep breathing and don't lift anything too heavy. You just want to get some blood into the muscle. Using resistance bands is great or very light weights. You want to think from head to toe. Visualize each muscle group and do an exercise for each.

If you feeling like you are cramping up take a little salt in, or sip a little Pedialite. Don't be afraid to tell an expediter. They will help you out back there.

Keep Breathing....
Stay Calm....

Remember it is your day, have fun, make friends, SMILE!!!! It will relieve stress if you just SMILE! Go get oiled and get in line to go out onto stage. While you are waiting in line keep
squeezing the muscle, keep breathing and remember...all the work is done - time to relax and enjoy every minute..it will fly by so fast you won't even remember being up there!!!!
