A Thanksgiving Message

In the spirit of Thanksgiving I want to start my November newsletter giving thanks for all I am blessed with. Everyday I wake up, I am grateful for the day and my health! I am also thankful for having my parents with me in life to enjoy my journey. They are my biggest fans and supporters both with bodybuilding and life in general. I am thankful for having such a selfless trainer, Tim Gardner, who guides me in my quest to always better myself, taking nothing but the joy of helping.
I am thankful for the new friendships I have made this year through my travels and the opportunities that have opened up as a result. And of course, the old friendships that never fade (you know who you are). There is so much to be thankful for that I couldn't possibly list it all here. I will end by thanking GOD for putting light into my life.
BE BLESSED!

FIT TIP

Thanksgiving Dinner Without Total Guilt

Just because we are giving thanks, don't use the excuse that the "holidays are for splurging"! Thanksgiving dinner can be eaten without total guilt if you STAY AWAY FORM THE CASSEROLES AND PIES! Choose leaner, cleaner choices. Load up on the white meat turkey.
Choose sides like salad or veggies that have been roasted or steamed . Cranberry jell isn't that bad if you need a little sweet treat.

Of course you could always MAKE the food so it has less calories in it; mashed potatoes with olive oil and spices in stead of butter and cream, roasted butternut squash instead of mashed with tons of butter, steamed green beans with almonds drizzled with olive oil instead of green bean casserole.

You can bake using less oils and butter, replace them with applesauce (sugar free).
Substitute Splenda for sugar or cut back on the amount you use in pies and cakes. There's always sugar free/fat free cool whip? There are lots of options.

Personally, I would rather cook the main course cleaner so I can cheat with a piece of pie!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Carla's Training

After talking it over with Tim, I have decided to compete at the Sacramento Pro on 2/24/07. Promoter, John Lindsey dropped figure and added womens' BB and got weight classes approved as well. I feel we should support his efforts, especially us "little" girls of the sport.

Momma Lana has graciously offered for me to stay at her house during the time I am there so that will defray the cost and Stacy has agreed to fly me out!

So the game plan is that right after Thanksgiving the diet will start. The cardio and training has never stopped (except for a few missed cardio sessions in South Beach that went along with a few Mojitos!!!) so it shouldn't bee too hard!

So sports fans....That is the plan so far for 2007…we'll see how it goes and move on from there.

NOVEMBER NATIONALS - THE BATTLE OF SOUTH BEACH

Miami

Miami Florida - Another bodybuilding season comes to a close. What better way to finish off the season but to be in South Beach, Miami. I love it there…the Latin flavor…the sun and warmth….the uniqueness of a city being on the beach….Then add the athletes.
How can you go wrong?

I arrived to Miami on Thursday (11/9/06) and spent my day with Stacy Kaufman of Protan. I visited his offices and met the staff, talked business and saw the operation work. The location is in an awesome area outside of Ft. Lauderdale (Weston/Sunrise) and Stacy seems to have fun at work!

I made my way over to the host hotel just in time to do cardio on the beach at sunset. This definitely calmed whatever nerves I had. Beautiful water, sand, grasses and pink and
turquoise sky…AHHHH!

I went to work weigh-ins and the electricity was in the air as the athletes milled around the lobby. Meeting and greeting old friends and new is always the best part of the weigh-ins! Dinner was with Tim and Brandie and crew. Tim had Debi Laszewski, Debbie Barnes, Denise Fisher, Beth Watcher all in the show. Debi, and Beth were at the dinner table along with Ellen Woodley (middle weight competitor), and Chris Eddy. Drinks and steaks flowed and it was fun catching up. Beth Watcher told me how I inspired her…this was just plain touching!!!

!!! Big Bill Wilmore joined us and before you know it I was accompanying him to a gathering with the presidents and owners of Vyotech. We met up with them and went from bar to bar in a limo. At one point I looked around and there I was with these FABULOUS people at the DELANO having drinks! "Who's life is this anyway????"

From there it was off to Mangos to meet up with Haney Rambod and friends for some more drinks. Needless to say it was late night and morning cardio came early!

Debi Laszewski

So Friday it was up at sunset for cardio…again beautiful and soothing! Nicki and Dave had come in late the night before and announced the news that they had gotten engaged! Nicki is sporting a Tiffany diamond from the Atlas collection…NICE! They just BEAMED all weekend! I am sooo happy for them

I met with Barry Brooks for a photo shoot on Friday and had an awesome time with him. He is a great guy and easy to shoot with. The colors and weather were perfect for shooting! Friday evening was men's and fitness prejudging. The Jackie Gleason Theater was buzzing with all the excitement of the biggest national level show of the year. There were almost 200 men to get ready for stage….our work was cut out for us for sure! The Protan team rocked with me and Nicki at the helm, new member Mary Hobbs rockin it and 2 fill-ins, IFBB pros; Dr. Dena Westerfield and Joanna Thomas. The men looked great and it was clear that several battles would ensue. After the prejudge we headed off to Jerry's Deli on Colllins. A trip to South beach isn't complete without a meal (or two) at Jerry's. This was an early night as Saturday morning was an early call!!! .

11/11/06 Woman and fitness prejudging today! If I thought the men looked good….man….Those women were off the chain. I think that the women were much more competitive this year than the men and a lot prettier than in past years. I was sooo excited. You could feel the
electricity in
the air for sure.

The light weights and light heavyweights were super competitive. Those classes just battled for sure! Barbara Fletcher, Tera Guzman and Jaimie Troxel were shuffled around. In the lightheavies they called out Debi Lazsewski, Elena Seiple and Kristy Hawkins. Kristy was the dark horse…she brought a super shredded package to the stage and battled with the top 2 favorites. Those three were shuffled around too and brought back out for another look. Anticipation was everywhere! It seemed clear in the heavies that veteran, Lora Ottenad, would take her class. She had been pushing for a card for years (like 12). There wasn't much time in between the day and night shows but we regrouped and were ready for battle.

Team Protan's best fan, Kris Murrell, brought us treats to keep us going through the finals! We love to see her coming! The battle raged and the outcome had some controversy for the men but was pretty spot on for the women. Desmond Miller took the supers and overall, Lionel "LTrain" Brown took the heavies, Stan McQuay took the heavies Garrett Allen took the middles. The controversy came with the light heavy weight class. Charles Dixon, seemed to be the clear favorite but was awarded 2nd. This caused a slight ripple but Charles was able to regain composure and carry on.

For the women; Jaimie Troxel (who took a 2nd to me last year) took the light weights, Lisa Bickles (after a return from figure) took middles, beautiful Debi Lazsewski took the heavies, and Lora Orrand took the heavies and overall.

I know that Tim was thrilled to have another pro win to his credit and Debi was thankful to have had him in her corner!
I was backstage prepping them before the overall and felt so emotional. It was a year anniversary since I earned my card.

I told them to play with each other up there and pay attention as it goes fast! WOW!

The Muscular Development after party was at the Opium Garden. Dave Palumbo hosted myself, Nicki and Dave Henry in the MD limo and got us in to the party. It was fun and time passed quickly and I WAS TIRED!

Sunday was a lazy day by the pool. There were photoshoots going on and competitors coming and going. We hung out with Dave Follensbee (Ma/NH district chairman) and Maggie Blanchard. Maggie had placed 3rd in fitness…looking her best ever! We moved out of the host and into digs right in South Beach later that day. I was in the Albion which was a beautiful, modern, art deco gem with a little pool area. Dave and Nicki, on the other hand were at the Clevelander on Ocean Dr. (Kind a like spring break crowd in a Days Inn hotel).

This was the source of a lot of laughs! That night we spent with Kris Murrell and Vinny and Dr. Mike (expediters). We had dinner at Sushi Siam and then went for drinks at the Skybar in the Shore Club. Dr. Mike and Vinny entertained us with "bang, bang, bang" comedy (they will know what that means) and we just kind of chilled out. Kris had never been to South Beach so we felt compelled to bring her to a couple "hot spots" on Ocean Dr. We should have quit at the Skybar!!! The night ended in eats at….You guessed it…JERRY'S.
Maggie Blanchard

Monday brought another photoshoot at the host hotel with Dan Ray. This time Kris joined me for a few shots for something different. It was actually a lot of fun. We left there in her Hummer and met Nicki and Dave for lunch at the Cardoza Café.

The party was pretty much over after that…Nicki and Dave and Kris all took off and I lingered for one more day of R&R!
